Tricia has taught Singapore Math for the past six years in grade levels kindergarten through seventh. She received her Master’s Degree in Mathematics Education in 2004 and has trained teachers in Singapore Math methods throughout the United States, in the Caribbean, and at The American School in Switzerland. For the past four years she has served as the Math Coach at Benchmark School in Phoenix, Arizona, which is frequently featured in the Phoenix media for having some of the highest math test scores in the state.
Tricia’s experience with the success of Singapore Math is extended into her personal life as well. As a parent she could see firsthand the benefits of using these materials and methods evidenced through the high math scores and the confidence of her youngest daughter. Her enthusiasm grew as she was able to see students graduating from Benchmark and moving into middle schools throughout the Phoenix area with a greater degree of competence. This success and the desire to share this important tool with others looking for opportunities to excel in the area of mathematics inspired her to found SMARTTraining with her partners, Sherri Adler and Cassandra Turner.

Hi Diane,

I am the math coach at Benchmark School in Phoenix.  Benchmark has used Singapore Math as its sole math program for 7 years.  The results at Benchmark have been fantastic.  If you'd like to discuss our experience at Benchmark, I'd be more than happy to speak with you.  You can reach me at 602-570-1942.

Book Study: Knowing and Teaching Elementary Mathematics

Chapter 1: Subtraction with Regrouping

Dr. Ma states that "A good vehicle, however, does not guarantee the right destination."  (page 5)
Have you, in the past, attempted to demonstrate an issue in math to your students with manipulatives, only to find that the students seemed more confused after the demonstration than before?  If so, what went wrong?

How is your manipulative use going in Singapore Math?

Do you understand why Tr. Belinda's and Ms. Florence's use of manipulatives for the problem 52 - 25 was conceptually incorrect for the understanding of subtraction with regrouping?  If so, can you see why using base-10 blocks and/or place value disks is a better representation of the concept?

Read carefully the second paragraph on page 16 regarding the difference between the US and China's understandings of the problems 5 + 7 = 12 and 12 - 7 = 5.  Think of how you learned these problems as a student and how you taught them prior to teaching Singapore Math.  Are you putting the differences in understanding, and therefore in teaching, into practice in your classroom this year?

Are you having discussions in class after using manipulatives in a lesson?  Perhaps you could meet with other teachers in your grade level to prepare discussion questions.  Dr. Ma states that such discussions depends on the conceptual understanding of the teacher, and lead to deeper understanding of the students.

There are Singapore Math middle school books on www.singaporemath.com available if you are planning to homeschool your child. At the current time, there are not many middle schools using Singapore Math in the US. The number of elementary schools is growing by leaps and bounds, however, so I am confident that there will be middle schools and high schools using Singapore Math in the future.

Hi mathlover,

The new Standards Edition Earlybird Kindergarten books are fantastic! The Teacher's Guides are easy to use and give excellent suggestions for creating discussion in the classroom. There are textbooks and activity books, with accompanying nursery rhymes big books. These kindergarten materials start children thinking about and discussing math early, preparing them to be confident and competent students.
